2022 Subaru Ascent Earns Highest Safety Rating

If you need a good reason to consider buying a new Subaru, the 2022 Subaru Ascent 3-Row SUV just received the highest possible safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for its side-impact test. This new, enhanced vehicle safety check was recently tested on 18 midsize SUVs and the 2022 Subaru Ascent passed with flying colors.

This side-impact test simulates a crash involving two vehicles colliding at an intersection by using a heavier, 4,200-pound barrier that travels at a higher speed to mimic the striking vehicle. The new test better approximates the weight of most modern midsize SUVs, up 900 pounds from previous tests. And, the speed of impact is also increased from 31 to 37 MPH. Producing 82 percent more energy, this assessment mimics a more real-life SUV side impact collision scenario.

Several factors are considered in order for a vehicle to earn a TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. They must receive “Good” ratings in each of the following six crashworthiness and crash avoidance evaluations; moderate overlap front, driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints & seats. Factors such as interior and exterior vehicle conditions and “dummy” occupant injuries are evaluated after the simulated crash. Side airbag and seat belt impacts are also examined to see how well they prevent “dummy” head injuries.

The 2022 Ascent not only earned the top rating in the new side-impact test, it earned the highest possible rating in all six categories! “Our top priority with Ascent is to provide customers with a functional and capable SUV with the highest standards in safety,” said President and CEO of Subaru of America, Inc.’s Thomas J. Doll. It’s not just the Ascent that received safety awards. In fact, eight Subaru models earned 2022 IIHS safety awards.
