Consumer Reports Names Subaru Best Mainstream Brand for Second Consecutive Year

Subaru LogoConsumer Reports is known for its rigorous testing process for the vehicle evaluations it publishes each month. They also send surveys to readers about their vehicle ownership experience. Together, they have once again rated Subaru as the top non-luxury brand and second overall among all 34 rated brands. Twin Falls Subaru is proud to share this news.

This is the second year in a row that Subaru has had the top non-luxury brand rank. It is also the second consecutive year that Subaru has been second only to BMW overall. “The key for both companies is their consistent combination of high road-test scores and very good predicted reliability, Says Consumer Reports in their report.

Luxury brands can have an advantage in satisfaction evaluation because they often deliver on what people will pay extra to have. Luxury cars deliver luxury, and performance cars deliver performance, and if they don’t fail spectacularly in other areas, they will have satisfied owners. In fact, the only brands with higher-than-average satisfaction ratings were either luxury brands (BMW, Porsche, Genesis, Alfa Romeo) or highly specialized brands such as Mini, Tesla, and Rivian.

Subaru’s success in the ratings is a testament to its ability to excel in multiple areas. Whether you prioritize reliability, versatility, economy, comfort, or performance, Subaru delivers. This versatility is what sets Subaru apart from other mainstream brands.

With a score of 80, Subaru was just below BMW, which had a score of 82, and just above Porsche, which also scored an 80, though Consumer Reports does not show them as having tied.

“What’s more interesting, probably at the top, is seeing Subaru; they’re No. 2 sandwiched between two luxurious expensive German automakers [BMW and Porsche, at No. 3], and that’s almost more impressive that this is a brand with much more affordable vehicles that also score well,” said Jake Fisher, Consumer Report’s Director of Auto Testing.

The next highest mainstream brand was Honda, followed further down by Kia, Mazda Toyota, and Hyundai. Subaru also had the highest road test score average among mainstream brands, with an average score of 84 (out of 100), and was only among four mainstream brands with an overall above-average Predicted Reliability rating.
