​​For a Pure Sports Coupe Experience, Try the 2026 Subaru BRZ​

There is something captivating about a sports car with three pedals. Perhaps it’s the engagement provided by a manual transmission, something that asks you to directly control clutch engagement, throttle control, and selecting the proper gear, that makes the driver feel more connected than in any other car. 

Just when we think these kinds of vehicles no longer exist, the 2026 Subaru BRZ corrects that notion, while reminding us that driver engagement is the key to an enjoyable – or as the editors at Top Speed put it, “analog” – sports car. 

The 2026 BRZ has a familiar kind of look and feel, both inside and out. It leverages a classic sports coupe design, with a long hood and a short rear deck. The sloping roofline is part of this work of art, yielding to a discrete trunk that’s capped with an artfully integrated rear spoiler. 

Inside, there is true 2+2 seating. The driver’s cockpit is a mix of digital readouts – including a G-force meter – dominated by a large analog dial. You can see and feel the needle with every clutch and shift action. The infotainment touchscreen may also be digital, but it is a nod to today’s needs. That includes connecting your smartphone device to the touchscreen. The driver and front passenger get high back Ultrasuede bucket seats that lock you with ample bolstering.  

The real magic starts in the footwell, leading to the center console. A six-speed manual transmission offers shirt throws to each gear. The left pedal – the clutch – enables you to coordinate up- or downshifts upon your becking call. Listen to the revs coming from the 228-horsepower 2.4-liter BOXER four-cylinder engine prompts you to give the gearbox and your left leg an easy workout.  

You can get more out of your driving experience. A button on the center console engages Track Mode, which adjusts parameters of both the traction and stability control systems to allow for a little more slip, yaw, and spirited driving while still helping keep you safe behind the wheel. 

What the 2026 BRZ is all about is what Top Speed calls “pure driving.” Combining a light curb weight with driveline performance, a Torsen limited-slip differential, and rear-wheel drive – a solution to the power-to-weight ratio enthusiasts crave. Top Speed concluded that the 2026 BRZ “is the back-to-basics sports car that does all that.”
