Forester, Outback & Ascent are Top-Ranked SUV’s in KBB’s Lowest 5 Year Cost to Own
Buying a new car is exciting, but there are plenty of costs that can pop up after the sale, not the least of which are maintenance and running costs. Fuel, maintenance, and insurance add up over time, though some models offer a less expensive ownership experience than others. Three Subaru models made Kelley Blue Book’s list of least expensive 2023 models to own, with the Forester, Outback, and Ascent beating out dozens of models for a spot on the coveted list.

KBB estimated that the five-year cost to own a Forester came to $37,367, $3,635 less than the segment average. The Ascent came to $47,833, a whopping $5,087 below average, and the Outback came out at $41,222, $8,772 cheaper than the average five-year costs. KBB looks at the purchase price, ongoing ownership costs, and depreciation to calculate the list. Fuel, insurance, financing, and other factors like state registration and fees play into the decision.

Subaru performed well in the assessment due to its vehicles’ reasonable purchase price, good fuel economy, and solid reliability. The 2023 Ascent earned a J.D. Power Quality and Reliability score of 81/100, the Outback earned a 73, and the Forester an 84. Additionally, Subarus typically fall at or below the average cost to insure, with some insurers looking at the standard all-wheel drive and extensive safety equipment as bonuses for drivers.

The list of least expensive vehicles to own is interesting because electric vehicles don’t always take the win, despite the fact that they don’t need fuel fill ups and typically require less maintenance.
