How Does The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Compare to the Hyundai Kona

The addition of the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid to our lineup adds the right amount of efficiency to a great small package. It also adds more power to tackling the weather with balanced traction. Sounds like a great combination to us!
We know that a lot of consumers like to compare our 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid with all of the competitors in its size class. Recently, MotorTrend compared a Limited Hybrid model with the Hyundai Kona. We’re curious, as you are, about how they found our electrified small crossover over the others.
It all starts with a great package. The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid has a small footprint that is made for adventure wherever you want to go. The versatile hatchback can seat up to five, while carrying up to 50.6 cubic feet of cargo with the rear seats down.

The addition of the Hybrid driveline means more power and improved fuel economy. With a net combined 194 horsepower, you now have more passing power and a smoother highway cruise than before. Getting up hills – paved or unpaved – is more manageable than ever. Add the efficient Lineartronic continuously variable transmission and the traction of Symmetrical all-wheel drive, and you have a winning combination for a vehicle that weighs just 3,662 pounds.
In turn, the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid is rated by the EPA to achieve around 36 MPG in city and highway driving. That comes down to a range of 597 miles.
Even though it’s a Hybrid, there is no real change in the 2026 Crosstrek’s most important measurement – ground clearance. Even with a small battery pack feeding the electric motors, it still maintains an 8.7-inch distance from the surface. That makes it great for getting through unplowed snow or uneven surfaces.

If you compare the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid with the Kona, you will find that the Subaru is more efficient with standard all-wheel drive. As we pointed out before, the higher ground clearance also helps. Plus, it has the experience of handling our Southern Idaho winters with ease. More importantly, the Kona does not come with a hybrid driveline.
There is more to this comparison, since MotorTrend declared the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid its winner. They said that the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek is “more fun to drive, has more comfy front seats, and gets way, way, way better gas mileage, with no significant penalty in performance.”
