Subaru Highway Hands Free Assist Explained
With the introduction of the all-new 2026 Subaru Outback, the company also showed off a new feature that’ll arrive as standard equipment on the new Outback as part of the updated EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, Highway Hands Free Assist.

New Advanced Hands-Free Technology
This new hands-free advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) will put Subaru in direct competition with GM’s Super Cruise and Ford’s BlueCruise, which is a first for the company. Like the systems from Ford and GM, the Highway Hands Free Assist is considered a Level 2 autonomous driving system, which means the system can handle certain driving tasks, like traveling down the highway. While you need to keep your eyes on the road and have your hands ready to take over in an emergency, you can relax a good bit and open a snack or a soda, comfortably have a drink (not alcohol), and eat something light. Subaru says its system works up to 85 mph.

New Features Subaru Engineered for The New Outback
Three features make the Highway Hands Free Assist system special for Subaru:
- Automatic Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection – This system takes control in the event that the driver becomes unresponsive, pulls onto the shoulder, brings the car to a stop, turns on the hazards, unlocks the doors, and calls emergency services.
- Pre-Curve Speed Control – This slows the Subaru down when it’s about to enter a corner to provide a more relaxed ride.
- Highway Active Lane-Changing Assist with Automatic Resume Assist – This allows you to put on your turn signal while the car does all the work, changing lanes safely and resuming the desired speed set on the cruise control.
Award-Winning Driver Assistance Tech
In order to make sure the hands-free driving tech and other safety systems work better than ever, Subaru fitted its award-winning EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology with three new cameras, one being a wider-angle mono camera to better see pedestrians and cyclists, along with more radar sensors to enhance the abilities of the technology.

The New Outback Will Be Incredibly Safe

The new 2026 Outback will come standard with Front Pre-Collision Braking, Front Cross Traffic Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Acceleration Override Assist, Lane Centering, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Sway Warning, Emergency Stop Assist, Vibrating Haptic Steering Wheel, and Lane Departure Warning. Additionally, the new Outback adds available Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection, Pre-Curve Speed Control, Highway Active Lane Change Assist, and Highway Automatic Resume Assist.
