When it comes to buying a new car, resale can sometimes be a back-burner issue. Appearance, performance, and features may all grab your attention, while the resale value may seem like something way off in the future. Plus, it involves research that isn’t readily at hand. By contrast, when you sell your car, resale value is everything. What you get for your old car may make a difference in what you can get as a new one or how much that car will cost you. So choosing a vehicle with solid resale value can save you money in the long run. Fortunately, companies such as Kelly Blue Book and Black Book do much of that research for us. And even more fortunately for Twin Falls Subaru customers, Subaru continues to score very well in resale value.

Kelly Blue Book Best Resale Value Awards

Kelly Blue Book Award

Kelly Blue Book (KBB) is one of the oldest names in resale valuation. In fact, the original Kelly Blue Books were simply lists of expected used car values per model and year. By looking at the resale of past models, KBB is able to project fairly accurate estimates of the 5-year resale value of new vehicles, which they display as a percentage of the new vehicle price. They have recently announced their Best Resale Value Awards for 2023 models.

In its 2023 list of ten SUVs with the best resale value, three of them were Subaru models. Furthermore, all SUV models on that list with starting MSRPs of under $30,000 were Subaru models. They are listed as follows:

2023 Subaru Crosstrek
5-Year Projected Resale Value: 61.0%
Type: Subcompact SUV
Starting Price: $23,645

KBB lauded the Crosstrek as having good off-road capabilities and excellent safety scores. They describe it as a good car for the daily commute that isn’t afraid to get dirty.

2023 Subaru Forester
5-Year Projected Resale Value: 60.6%
Type: Compact SUV
Starting Price: $26,395

KBB describes the Forster as among the best SUVs and a sensible choice that can also do adventure and luxury.

2023 Subaru Outback traversing challenging desert mountain terrain.

2023 Subaru Outback
5-Year Projected Resale Value: 57.8%
Type: 2-Row Midsize SUV
Starting Price: $28,395

The Outback has had impressive resale value for a long time, and KBB sees nothing in the new one to change that, including solid safety, good space, and practicality, as well as attractive pricing.

Canadian BlackBook Residual Value Awards

Canadian Black Book logo

Black Book rose out of the rise in leasing several decades ago when they saw a need to help manufacturers and others offering leases determine the residual value of lease-end vehicles, which has such a great impact on the lease monthly payments. From our neighbors just above the border, Canadian Black Book has only recently started offering resale awards. In the award’s second year, they also recognized the high residual value of several Subaru models. Their awards are based on the first, second, and third-place vehicles of specific categories with the highest residual value. Here is how Subaru’s placed:

Subaru Impreza
Category Car: Main (non-luxury)
1st Place

Subaru Crosstrek
Category: SUV: Main Compact/Sub-Compact
2nd Place

Subaru BRZ
Category: Sports Car: Main
3rd Place

Subaru Solterra
EV SUV Below $60,000
3rd Place

What all this means is that Subaru vehicles are as good to sell as they are to own. If you want the vehicle in your driveway to hold its value, you should pay a visit to Twin Falls Subaru to take a look at just these award winners as well as the rest of the Subaru lineup that has been created with the same values and engineering excellence.
