Subaru Outback – 30 Years of Being One of the Safest and Most Dependable Vehicles

April 20th, 2025 by

2025 Subaru Outback Wilderness Off RoadWhen you think of long-running, all-in-one vehicles that look like wagons, have the space of an SUV, and drive like hatchbacks, you’ll probably think of the Subaru Outback. For the past 30 years, the Outback has been one of the few vehicles that has continued to shine. Parents have handed them down to their kids as their first vehicle in high school, the car they take to college, and then the car they trade for another Subaru.

Three Million Cars Sold and Counting

In 2024, Subaru officially sold the three millionth Outback in the United States, and since 1995, it has been one of the brand’s most popular models. It’s so popular, in fact, that Subaru itself says it is the reason the company survived in America.

Named for the Australian Outback, Subaru debuted the SUV-like Outback wagon in 1995. They decided to market it with the most Australian thing imaginable: Paul Hogan, Mr. Crocodile Dundee himself. It was either him, Fosters (Australian for Beer), or Outback Steakhouse. Since Hogan was the only one who could drive a car and speak, he won out.

Standard AWD and Excellent Usability

Unlike almost every other wagon and SUV on the market since 1995, the Subaru Outback has always come standard with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and it has saved plenty of lives by getting drivers out of sticky situations. In reviews by car magazines and online publications alike, the Subaru Outback is regularly seen as one of the more perfect vehicles that drivers can buy, with Car and Driver saying, “… the current Outback is really good at its core mission—hauling five passengers and their gear in comfort through the kind of wintry conditions that leave bro-dozers in ditches.”

As the Outback has been a reliable and enjoyable mode of transportation for many, it also has a storied history as one of the safest vehicles in production. Every year since 2010, the Outback has been named a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and routinely gets five stars overall in crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The current 2025 Subaru Outback offers buyers a lot for a starting price of just $30,430. Two engines are available for the Outback, with the Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, and Limited trims getting a 2.5-liter Subaru BOXER® 4-cylinder engine that produces 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. Those who want a little extra power can opt for the turbocharged Subaru BOXER® 2.4-liter in the Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, Limited XT, and Touring XT, which delivers 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Regardless of the engine in your Outback, you will be able to use regular 87-octane fuel, unlike many engines from so-called premium brands.

The Usability of an SUV or Truck Without the Added Stigma

As mentioned previously, Subaru has always taken pride in the fact that the Outback has standard all-wheel drive and will allow you to drive through some of the worst conditions on the road. Each Outback has a minimum of 8.7 inches of ground clearance, with the off-road-ready Wilderness model bumping that up to 9.5 inches. This means the Outback has more clearance than loads of SUVs and even some pickup trucks. If you need to tow, the Subaru wagon has you covered with 2,700 lbs of maximum capacity on all models except for XT and Wilderness trim levels that offer 3,500 lbs of towing ability when properly equipped.

Subaru has become synonymous with safety, as highlighted earlier. Every new Outback features the award-winning EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology that offers drivers an entire suite of incredible safety equipment that includes adaptive cruise control Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, LED Steering Responsive Headlights with High Beam Assist, LED fog lights, Rear-Vision Camera with Adaptive Guidelines, and X-MODE® with Hill Descent Control. The models that are optioned with Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert will also get Automatic Emergency Steering, which helps drivers avoid things in the road that seemingly appear out of nowhere.
