Subaru Scores Three IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards

Subaru is known as one of the world’s safest automakers. It is almost a foregone conclusion that every new Subaru will be an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick, thanks to the engineering that goes into each new Subaru.
Three New Subaru Models Rank as the Safest
For 2026, the IIHS has announced that the Forester (including Wilderness and Hybrid models), Ascent, and the all-new Outback (including the Wilderness trim) have been awarded the honor of being Top Safety Pick+.
A Word from Subaru
“Earning IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards for 2026, considering the enhanced testing criteria, is a defining achievement for Subaru,” said Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer, Subaru of America, Inc. “The awards reflect our ongoing commitment to safety and delivering vehicles our customers trust to protect them and their passengers in everyday driving.”
Subaru’s Legacy of Safety
With this announcement, this marks 20 straight years of the Forester being a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+, 16 straight years for the Outback, and every year for eight years running for the Ascent, which first became available in 2019.

Meet The 2026 Forester
The 2026 Subaru Forester is available with a choice of gas or hybrid engines, starting at $31,445. Gas models have a 2.5-liter Subaru Boxer engine that produces 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Hybrid models feature the same engine combined with a lithium-ion battery, delivering a total of 194 horsepower. Standard Forester models get an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, while Hybrid models increase that to 35 city and 34 highway.
Say Hi to the All-New Outback
The all-new 2026 Outback starts at $36,445, including destination, and offers customers a more SUV-like experience than ever before. Buyers can choose between a 2.5-liter Subaru Boxer engine that produces 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, or a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine that produces 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Customers will love having 42.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat and 75.9 cu.ft. when those seats are folded. The EPA estimates that with the 2.5-liter engine, Outback customers will return 25 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, while turbocharged models can achieve 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
The Ascent Is an Amazing Three-Row SUV
The 2026 Ascent is the flagship SUV in the Subaru lineup, with three rows of seats to accommodate either 7 or 8 passengers, depending on whether the second row has captain’s chairs. The Ascent starts at $42,245 and offers customers 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, which expands to 43.5. when the third row is folded flat. When all rear seats are folded, owners will have a total of 75.6 cu.ft. All models are equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine producing 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates owners will see 20 mpg during city driving and 26 mpg on the highway.
