The 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness Is Coming
Every Subaru is more rugged than the standard versions of the competition. However, because Subaru believes everyone deserves an adventure, it offers the Wilderness trim level for several models. The 2026 Forester Wilderness—now updated with the sixth-generation enhancements that the rest of the Forester line received for model-year 2025—will carry customers through even more adventures.
An Upgraded Powertrain Makes the Wilderness Special
The Forester Wilderness, powered by the same engine as the regular Forester, has been tweaked for better power delivery at low revs. The 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER four-cylinder puts out 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque and is paired with the lovely Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that has also been reworked with a shorter final drive ratio that is better for slow-speed off-roading. Power is put to the ground via the premier Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.
A Better CVT and X-MODE System for Increased Performance
The upgraded Lineartronic CVT works perfectly in conjunction with the X-MODE Dual Mode System that allows drivers to select the driving surface they are on instantly to achieve the best grip and drivability. The system in the Forester Wilderness adds Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud for added abilities. And thanks to the 9.3 inches of ground clearance, the Wilderness will have no problems getting through some of the toughest terrain.
Better Angles of Attack
When driving off-road, owners will appreciate the better approach, departure, and breakover angles compared to the 2025 Forester models. With 23.5 degrees of approach, 21.0 degrees of departure, and 25.5 degrees of breakover, the Wilderness sees an increase of 2.5, 1.4, and 0.9 degrees, respectively, compared to the rest of the Forester lineup.
Special Wheels, Extra Cooling, and More Towing Capacity
All Wilderness models ride on unique 17-inch anthracite wheels wrapped in all-terrain Yokohama Geolander tires. The Wilderness also gets better transmission cooling and a rear differential temperature sensor. While normal Forester models can tow from 1,500 pounds up to 3,000 pounds, because of the new transmission cooler, the Wilderness can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.
Still Very Tech Focused
Just like other Forester models, the Wilderness features an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The driver also gets a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster display that shows special Wilderness-only visuals on the screen.
New Production Techniques Afford the Wilderness Better Rigidity
Subaru says it used stronger welding techniques along with extra structural adhesive to increase torsional rigidity by 10%. The company says this helps to improve overall performance, while also offering better ride quality and a quieter cabin.
