Subaru Produces Final Legacy Sedan in America

The Subaru Legacy is riding off into the sunset. Subaru of Indiana Automotive produced the last-ever Legacy sedan in September, a Limited trim level in Magnetite Gray. As the oldest Subaru model produced for America, it was also the first-ever Subaru manufactured at the company’s facility in Indiana.

First American Subaru

First introduced to America on September 11, 1989, it’s only fitting that the final Subaru Legacy left the same production facility on September 12, 2025, some 36 years later. The Legacy was first produced as the Legacy Wagon, which would later become the basis for the Outback. The Legacy Wagon and sedan were very successful in the United States, selling more than 1.3 million models over those nearly four decades.

“This is a bittersweet moment for our company and our associates,” said Scott Brand, President and Chief Operating Officer of Subaru Indiana Automotive. “While an important chapter in our history has been brought to a close, we’re already turning the page and starting a new one.”

Changes in The Automotive Landscape

The end of the Legacy line marks significant changes in the automotive landscape, where crossovers, SUVs, and electric vehicles are expected to be the preferred choices of customers over the coming years. This is especially true when you look at sales trends of the Crosstrek, Ascent, Outback, Forester, and the all-electric Solterra.

“We’re excited for what lies ahead,” said Brand. “Bringing gas-powered and hybrid Forester production to the U.S. will provide quicker market response for one of Subaru’s most popular models, while also introducing hybrid processes and technology into our operations.”

America Features a Special Manufacturing Facility

Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) is the only Subaru production facility outside of Japan, producing roughly 50% of all vehicles sold in North America. The company produced its eight millionth vehicle in November.
