Which Crosstrek Is The Best Crosstrek?

Everyone loves the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and with good reason. Whether you are a journalist or just a regular car shopper, the Crosstrek offers standard all-wheel drive, at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance, excellent fuel mileage, and loads of usability, starting at just $25,195.
Testing All Trim Levels
The writers at automotive news and review website Motor1 took it upon themselves to help buyers decide which Subaru Crosstrek is the right one to buy. With loads of options these days, not just from other automakers but numerous trim levels and options, it’s helpful for many prospective customers who want to have their options narrowed down.

Crosstrek Sport
The Crosstrek Sport is the middle trim and gets 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway and starts at $29,195. Motor1 said, “… The Sport trim’s biggest draw is the more-powerful 2.5-liter Boxer four-cylinder making 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. That’s a decent 30 more hp and 33 additional lb-ft than the base car’s 2.0-liter engine.”

Crosstrek Wilderness
The Crosstrek Wilderness takes the off-road prowess and usability of the standard Crosstrek and turns it up to 10. Not only does it have a more powerful 2.5-liter engine, but it also gives customers true performance for non-main roads. “If you’re going to pay for more power, you might as well spring for the Wilderness model. The Crosstrek Wilderness has 9.3 inches of ground clearance compared to just 8.7 inches in all other Crosstrek models, plus underbody skid plates. On top of that, you get a standard roof rack that can carry as much as 165 pounds while the Crosstrek is in motion, or 700 pounds when parked. Plus a 3,500-pound towing capacity,” said Motor1.
Base & Premium Crosstrek
After testing the other models, Motor1 came to the conclusion that the base Crosstrek and Premium trim levels are the absolute best for buyers because “It’s hard to argue that the standard Crosstrek isn’t the best one to get, whether you go for the base model or the lightly upgraded Premium model. Starting at $26,540, it’s one of the most affordable crossovers in its class, and even the Premium trim I tested is just $28,085 before adding options.” The Premium model also gets 27 mpg city and 34 highway, which is the best mpg rating of all of the trim levels.

Safety, Safety, & More Safety
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Crosstrek their coveted Top Safety Pick award. The Crosstrek has been awarded either Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ every year since it entered the market in 2013. That is 11 years straight of being one of the safest vehicles money can buy. No doubt the smaller Subaru SUV is aided by excellent engineering coupled with state-of-the-art safety equipment, such as the award-winning EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology that features Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. In addition, Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert come standard. The Wilderness model gets Automatic Emergency Steering, which can help to assist the driver’s steering inputs to reduce the potential for a crash at or below 50 mph.
